Haha this is probably dumb but i’d love to see your take on your stripsearch co-stars or other friends seen as characters from the world of Skadi!
Hi Katie, I’ve been a big fan of yours almost since the beginning of Dumm.
I know it won’t be soon, and even if it’s after the comic actually ends, I would love to hear all about the ideas and stories that weren’t yours/don’t like anymore. I love looks at the creative process like that.
I would also love to see your sketchbook art. Most of what you draw has a great spark to it that I reall enjoy.
Also I hope teen Skadi’s friends return, mostly the amazon girl.
I’m curious too about just what those story rules and old ideas are, and how you would like to do it differently.
Skadi’s quest to eat of every beast? I’ve noticed it hasn’t appeared in the comic for some time.
I guess the easiest way to resolve that one would be to let her finish the quest; find the last beast on her list (which might be last for a reason) and – eventually, after a lot of trouble – eat it.
And then she’d need to figure out what to do next…
thanks for everithing katie! i cant say im the biggest or the oldest fan, but im a realy big fan of your work whit skadi, i realy love your art, and i enjoy the story and have a lot of fun reading it (i actualy red it in one day, the day ive discovered it, about the 3d of july, when Fizzle And Burn released)
I would realy like to see more skadi’s comic and it art, also if you start a new proyect i would like to see it to
(sory if my english is bad, im not very used to writing, so its also hard to express my self
sory, i didnt wanted to post i as a reply of this :p
Why do webcomics seem to go on break right when things are getting good.
As for what I’d like to see during this time honestly all those sound good except for guest art. Personally I’ve never liked webcomic guest art seasons. I’m always thinking ‘when is this gonna be over’.
Anyways, good luck with whatever
Why not get Skadi involved in some standard RPG quests? Kill the bandit leader! Fetch the shiny sword! Gather seventeen pumpkins! It would be interesting to see how Skadi might turn all those ideas on their heads. After all, Skadi has to live somehow!
This is possibly a stupid idea, but one way you could end this comic without actually ending the character is having Skadi somehow arrive at Camp Weedonwantcha and become a character there (that would only should up from time to time, not becoming a regular or anything).
Love your work!
I’ve personally always been fascinated by the skectches and essays of artists. You know, the kind of study done on a piece of paper, just pencil and no color, testing lines and curves and see how they do with each other? I actually buy this kind of books from artists I like.
So if you have any of those, please do share!
Hi Katie – first time commenter, long-time lover and reader of Skadi!
I could sort of sense an announcement like this was coming up – I’m also cursed and tend to admit that I love something too much right before it ends or goes on a hiatus, haha 😛 Lately, and especially since Camp W came about, I started noticing that Skadi was really developing and growing as a character you could really love, and personally I would be totally happy with that just continuing. I also loved seeing your pin-ups and bios throughout the comic. Would love to see some of the incidental or secondary characters and antagonists, more things like that throughout. Entries straight out of your sketchbook would rock…I would also love to see little sketchy tutorials too, could be fun 😛
In my little opinion, I would also be just as happy to see Skadicomic.com treated as your canvas where you could just freely share your stories, ideas and beautiful illustrations unfettered, segmented by Skadi arcs. Feeling weighed down by older restrictions previously placed on the story may be what ends the comic instead of something that comes straight from the artist we have all come to adore. I think that would be the worst case scenario here.
I suppose that would wind up being more of the same. My suggestion kind of sucks, sorry. I know nothing this good can last forever, but I’d be sad if the comic came to an abrupt ending that you weren’t fully satisfied with. I’d also be just as sad if I came to find out you were forcing your way through most updates without really feeling fulfilled by them.
I guess I’m going around in circles 😛 Mostly I’m trying to say that I hope you can come back to the comic feeling refreshed and happy after your break, and I want to let you know that any canon update is enough to keep at least one reader happy. I really do just love your work and Skadi is what sealed me as a big fan. I wouldn’t even mind a 180 as long as you came out happy on the other end.
Whatever you choose to do, good luck, and thanks for all that you do. I’ll stick around no matter what.
What is a typical day for Skadi like?
We usually read the interesting stuff – her adventures and her quest. But what are most days like. Is it any different from ours?
Hey Katie! It seems like you may see that dot on the horizon that is folding up shop for our favorite Barbarianess! So you both don’t have to 180 AND can choose to 180- have you thought about completing Skadi’s quest and sort of rebooting how her world works post-quest? Maybe new friends/enemies/problems/odors? I imagine things would have to be much different once she finishes and you’d be able to tell that new-ish story.
Also. Have we ever learned where Skadi got her badass sword skills?
Just do your thing, girl.
I actually feel like the comic has already changed quite a bit! Maybe I shouldn’t draw comparisons but I notice that between campcomic and Skadi you’re having fun jumping between comedy and story telling. I don’t think you could change the direction of the comic for the worse, especially if it keeps going the way its going – it just keeps getting better, if you ask me. I actually like the mix, funnies and sillies then story arcs and background reveals. It might be kind of a cop out answer but…I think I’d like to see more of all you listed, but at the pace you find comfortable, I think you space it out pretty well.
I guess the only issue here is I’m assuming you’re already starting to break with the old rules. Which might be be false because I know know what they are/were. Anyway, I’m glad I kept reading Skadi and it’s been cool watching the art style evolve and seeing how the characters change their look bit by bit as you experiment. I’ll keep having a peek every Thursday regardless of what you do.
Funny sketches and little blurbs about the upcoming changes.
All your suggestions sound awesome:
-Background stories that may require only one illo of a character and some juicy text.
-Guest comics or Fan art is just fantastic.
The most important think is that you still think of this as a fun thing to do and a way to express yourself, otherwise maybe Skadi would stop beign Skadi.
Cheers and hoping that your life keeps on its awesome trail!
I’d love to see sketchbook art. I also want to know more about Skadi’s family and tribe/clan.
I come here every Thor’s day for my Skadi fix so no real change for me. As for suggestions, just be you Katie. You’re an amazing artist and I’d enjoy anything you’d make. Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women/bushbeast. (thumbs up)
I’d like to see the story of Grund’s childhood, from birth to adulthood. He’d probably have the same expression on his face the whole time.
I didn’t discover Skadi until Strip Search, but it’s probably one of my favorite webcomics now, and usually the highlight of my webcomic week. The choose your own adventure story arc was fun, but honestly, as long as you update from time to time, there are probably a lot of us who will be happy to keep reading!
Irregular updates are fine by me, but I use an RSS reader to follow everything that I can. Including Skadi. And now this means I won’t get double-updates because I’m also subscribed to Dumm. And really, Dumm has changed quite a lot since it started!
I think if you put out a call for guest comics you’ll suddenly have more guest comics than you know what to do with. Of course I see this post and I think, “Oh, she needs guest comics!” So maybe you’ll soon be inundated with them.
Good luck with all your busy-ness!
I really like the sketchbook drawings. I also like backstories and guest comics. But sketchbook drawings is something I always enjoy.
Personally, I’d like to see more of those profiles of your characters such as the Cave Stupids, the Succubus or even Skadi’s sisters. I’m very interested in background information.
I’m also a sucker for fanservice. Loved some of the sexy stuff you did awhile ago. Would not mind a pinup here or there. I’ve grown rather fond of Skadi, Nit and Boudica as well.
I do have some questions as well.
I’m curious about how far Skadi’s gone with her meat eating quest. How close is she to going back home I wonder.
Are you going to update more than once a week since you’re not doing comics?
Are you close to ending your comic? I don’t need to know what the ending is per se, but are you reaching the end of Skadi?
What happened to Wildeyak? He just up and vanished.
Any plans to do another Choose Your Own Adventure for Skadi? I’m kinda curious as to how you planned that last one out? (I completely missed it when you first did it)
Kinda curious about Boudica’s kingdom. She’s a princess, but of what I don’t know.
How DOES Skadi get those boob cups to stay on?
And finally…can we get some more Sexy Pinups of the girls you’ve got?
Oh yeah…and what does Boudica look like without all that armor on?
Could you describe the voices of your characters? What actors/characters/celebs/whatever would they sound like? I’ve always been a bit of a voice fanatic.
Also what Teach said earlier. Fanservice is definitely a plus. I miss that in your comic!
Just have to say i love your webcomics and your arts.
Onwards a upwards!
I look forward to seeing your more personal take on the characters.
I’d also love to do a guest comic if you’re in dire need.
This is the first time I’ve commented on one of your comics. To be honest Skadi is pretty good as it is, and though it has changed a little since the very start, it continues to be good and of high quality. I hope the workload eases soon.
In terms of what I enjoy seeing, it’s got to be the short stories. The sketches, as it were. Recently we’ve had some long story arcs that require a lot of planning and a lot of writing. Both with your work and Gabe’s/Tycho’s, there’s nothing better than the one-off types of work that give a brief insight but with less commitment to long plot lines.
But however you take the comic, I’m sure we’ll still all enjoy it.
I wouldn’t know what I’d like to explore, but I can say that I like how the comic has evolved, even if I came in late. If you’re going to speed up that evolution, I’m exited.
I don’t really have any suggestions or questions, but I must say that Skadi has been my favorite comic for quite a while now. It has such a unique set of characters, with a unique art style and a unique style of humor.
I certainly enjoy the Camp comic too, but Skadi appeals more to my tastes. Therefore, it’s pretty disappointing to see this news. But I realize that the comics I read in the morning for a couple minutes before starting work take quite a lot of time, effort and commitment to make (especially comics as well drawn and colored as this!)
All I can say is keep doing what you do best. You obviously know what you’re doing.
Hey Katie, glad to see you’re keeping busy… to say the least lol. I think I agree with a few of your readers in that it would be awesome to see some sketchbook art! All those doodles of yours are gold hahaha… But besides those, I’d say mix it up! The sweet thing about Skadi IS that it’s such a cool mix of ideas and characters. Some time to re-format, work on some character evolution, and think over the future may be just the ticket! And watching that process happen is kind of a maga-bonus for the fans!
Best of luck!
I’d like to see an arc closing off any loose ends. You mentioned that you want to adjust a bit, giving yourself and the readers some closure before going on hiatus (and hopefully starting again soon!) might be nice.
That would be the finale. An arc that closes off all the loose ends spells out the end of the comic. Katie might not be going for that.
Not yet at least.
What would you suggest Katie do during the hiatus though?
Done some more thinking on this. I for one could do without background character info, but that’s just my opinion. Skadi’s own background has already been explored in some length.
Questions answered: Reader questions? Answered in comic form? Sounds interesting!
Guest art, sketchbook art: Both are good.
Another suggestion: Rejected stuff – ideas and outlines for comics that were scrapped (for whatever reason). Mort Walker sometimes released sketches for Beetle Bailey strips that never made it into finished versions, and they were usually a hoot to read in all their failed glory.
Additinally, there is some *older* material that exists but isn’t found here, which IMHO does belong on a dedicated Skadi site. Including:
– Early sketches and character designs. I don’t recall where I’ve seen them, maybe on the funnycute blog.
– Guest comics. There’s a bunch of them on Dumm (though finding them takes a bit of digging) but they’re not here.
Would like to see videos or a stream of the work (any work, not necessarily skadi) as it is being made. I like having that kind of stuff on for hours while I do work of my own, it is an encouragement to keep working rather than procrastinating, and also to set me a ridiculously high benchmark which I will never reach… The best kind of benchmark
I would LOVE to see background info for characters! I always feel like artists and writers know more about their characters than they’ll ever have room to share (especially in webcomics!), and I’m always super excited to get more of that!
thank you katie! your hard work is much appreciated
good luck with your life and best wishes
Hello. I found this comic recently, got hooked, and read through all of the episodes in the same evening with an increasing sense of dread that I had happened onto something good just as it was coming to an end.
The meat quest is fantastic. I would be sad to see it go, and the comic loses its vision when it strays too far from that core theme. Skadi is Groo’s female counterpart and a reversal of the buxom Frazetta babe, which you play to great effect. Diseasoid is endearing, although I’ve never cared for the name. He is her Rufferto but plenty distinct. Their interactions with their respective gods are another fantastic quality of the strip and very evocative of Conan and Crom.
I would like to recommend the works of Fritz Leiber as inspiration for future direction. His stories about Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser’s adventures in the city of Lankhmar are phenomenal staples of the fantasy genre. Fafhrd is one of those often overlooked barbarians. Skaldi would have an interesting life in a city like Lankhmar. The companions that she have fallen in with so far are pretty flat. She hasn’t found the Hall to her Oates.
Background is great when it is integrated into the story. The “Here’s a page of background because I don’t have time to write the story” approach sucks. I want to find out more about old characters through their meetings with new characters. No questions answered. No guest art. No sketchbooks. Save the latter for merchandising and Kickstarter stretch goals.
Turn this into something that pays the bills so your other work doesn’t have to distract you seems like the best plan to me. Gear up for the KS that collects all of these pages and more into a comprehensive graphic novel featuring guest art, illustrations, maps, etc. Sell many copies. Partner with someone who’ll do the board game or role playing game. Otherwise, well . . . comics that hit this point, peter out, and then kind of limp along with an update every month or two . . . and nobody wants another “Regular Marine.”
Best of luck! I’ve had a lot of fun reading it.
Love ya Katie! Love Skadi! Love Camp! As long as Skadi keeps doing brutal barbarian stuff I will be happy! Keep it up, keep Skadi violent, you are amazing.
Why don’t you ask for guest comics to your readers for the time you are busy, you could post those. I bet their are several who can draw and would love to tell a story of Skadi.
Thank you for so much enjoyment from reading your comics! I personally would like to see things with Boudica become a more permanent part of the strip, perhaps as a segway into whatever directions you’d like to take with the characters. During the hiatus, whatever you come up with is great, even if it’s just a simple “Hi!”, just don’t disappear on us!
The temporary leave of Skadi will most definitely be the most missed of the tens of comics I love to follow.
I enjoy Skadi greatly because it’s a VERY simple story, much alike Conan, find and devour all kinds of meat in the land. I also like how, alike Conan again, there are small details that linger on in the story to reappear later. To keep my response succinct, I find Skadi’s lack of care for proper attire (much alike Conan once more) extremely suiting to her barbaric character. I cannot think of anything I’d like to see changed in the story, but perhaps a hope that things will continue past finding all the meats.
When I first discovered Skadi, it was easily my favorite comic on Dumm, and still is to this day. There were some other gems on the site, but they’ve all since been phased out in lieu of what are, in my opinion, amateurish replacements. This comic has the Goldilocks effect through and through; every aspect of it is just right. The artwork has just the right amount of detail, elasticity and color, and the writing has just the right amount of humor, inventiveness, and bite-size storytelling. If Sunday comic strips were still the empire they were last century, Skadi could have easily sat among the best.
If you’re looking for feedback from your fans, all I can say is that I for one, miss Skadi’s old boob-cup and loin-cloth costume.
Katie, you do what you gotta do. Your fans will always love ya!
Personally, I would love more lore and back story pertaining to the world surrounding Skadi. Are there kingdoms around? Are vikings just beating up everyone everywhere? How much magic is out there and what kind is it? Honestly whatever you do is gonna be awesome, so just recharge those batteries and kick some ass! Best of luck!
Have you considered crowdsourcing a strip? It actually turned out really well for Dark Legacy (crowdsourced comic seen here: http://darklegacycomics.com/specials/3 ) and I really enjoyed how the artist/author cherry picked the good ideas and gave credit in the panels.
Hello, Ms. Katie Rice, I’m Jimmy G., Artist, Great Storyteller, and Traditional Animation Activist^^.
I really admire your WebComic of ‘Skadi’ ever since I discovered It back in 2009, and always keeping In-Touch with It every week.
I also admire your Resume, from Working in Animation, from being a Story Artist for ‘Spumco’ and ‘Nickelodeon’, and work alongside great legends like Mr. Butch Hartman, and I would One Day work in Animation, like being a Story Artist, Character Designer, and/or a Cel-Animator.
I’m also just saying that It sounds difficult for a great series to Fade so Quickly, like I could think of great Stories/Ideas for the series, something that you’ve thought of that wasn’t luke’s, or what If Skadi and Diseasoid meet Strange Look-alikes, and the real ones are accused of some silly crime that they did not commit, or the gang stepping into a ‘Fiery’ Inferno.
Like some of the Comments here say, ‘Keep on doing what you’re doing’, my fear also is that ‘Hope someone will never get too Old Drawing the Same Thing, you can Never get to Old for It’, like with good ol’ Spaz and ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’.
And I also like to make a Guest Comic for the Series, but I might need some Proper Help, and/or how to E-Mail It right.
But still, Your Stories/Characters/Drawing are Spectacular, You Keep up the Progress, and the Rest of us will be Ready for It.
Sorry to see the comic go. I’ve enjoyed it for such a long time and your work. I hope to see your new stuff in the future, wherever and whenever it comes out.
Your comic is awesome!! i started reading it maybe 2 years ago. it has a super unique and dynamic stile, and skadi is one of my personal fav charas ever!
So I hope you can still developing Skadi and friends story!!! I’d like to know about Skadi’s momma. :3 And if Diseasoid’s galfriend is alive somewhere. dat bushbeast is super funny. :3
Best wishes and greets from Mexico!
Skadi’s mom… Now that’s something I haven’t thought about.
Also fellow Mexican here.
I’m late to the Skadi party. I read through the whole archive a few months ago. So I don’t have a stake in it like the longtime readers.
That said, do what you like! It’s a loose, episodic strip with no sense of time passing or a realistic end goal. Like Camp W, you can do one-offs, short stories, recurring plots, throwaway plots, continuity, train-of-thought, whatever suits you. You make them all entertaining. Even if the strip stops being fun for you, you could end it any way you wanted without betraying your readers.
There are only two things I hope you’ll do. Wrap up the current storyline properly. And if you ever see a potentially permanent hiatus or complete shift in direction coming, give Classic Skadi a sendoff acknowledging everything she’s been through, even if it’s as brief and open-ended as the ending of Calvin and Hobbes. That would be a lot more satisfying than a sudden stop.
